Home for the Holidays. The saying goes. I traded my holiday traditions for time with my grandson and to do caricatures at a Family event All great things. Still I felt a sense of loss. No Christmas in Avondale or singing Christmas tree. As I look over the last year, there have been a lot of changes for the good but they have all come at a cost.
In January, my apartment rent increased by $300 and forced me to move from South Beach.
South Beach rents have been rising due to foreign investors flooding the market. The search for affordable apartments has put a squeeze on housing. Gentrification has added another component. “First the rats, then the roaches, then the artists, then the yuppies…” a friend once said.
Developers use artists to improve the ambiance of emerging neighborhoods and lure them in with cheap rent. Developers like Tony Goldman who revitalized SoHo, once offered cut-rate studios to artists in South Beach according to Departures.com. Developer Craig Robins in the Design District is using this strategy as well, they note.
