Your life matters and your choices make a difference. Barbara Capitman changed the facade of South Beach. Marjory Stoneman Douglas changed the course of the Everglades and Henry Flagler charted the future of Florida.
I thought about “old” Henry the other day when I was looking at photos of Monument Island. I visited Monument Island a couple years ago during Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day. Flagler is considered the Father of Florida Tourism. With his network of railroads, he helped to transform Florida into the tourist mecca that it is.
Monument Island is a memorial to Henry Flagler. It has a monument that symbolizes Flagler’s legacy. An obelisk dedicated to him is surrounded by four statues. The statues are: Education, Industry, Prosperity and Pioneer.
